Volunteer FAQs

What’s on the menu for lunch?

Volunteer groups supply their own lunches. Nearby spots can deliver catered lunches to our dock, which we will then bring over on the ferry and stash in a fridge on the island. We recommend the following spots for catering:

If you order from the Flour Bakery location at 19 Drydock Avenue, let us know. They’re right downstairs from our offices so we can pick up your order for you!

What facilities/amenities does the island have?

You’ll have access to indoor bathrooms, water fountains, and numerous spaces where you can cool off in the shade.

What should we bring to our volunteer day?

We provide work gloves, tools, sunscreen, and bug spray on the island. Volunteers should plan to arrive with:

  • Close-toed shoes.
  • Personal reusable water bottles.
  • Long pants are encouraged. We may be on trails which have ticks and bees.
  • A warm layer/windbreaker for the ferry ride.
  • Rain gear depending on the forecast.
  • Backpack for personal items such as snacks, camera, etc.

Do participants need to fill out a waiver?

Yes, please review and submit this online waiver. All members of your team must have this waiver submitted before they can board the ferry.

What if it rains on our volunteer day?

  • If it is not substantial rain, we will continue our project as planned or complete an indoor project as needed.
  • In the event of thunderstorms or other extreme weather events, our ferry may be cancelled to ensure safety while crossing the Harbor.
  • If the ferry is cancelled on your volunteer day, we will work with your team to reschedule for the earliest available rain date. We reserve rain dates in advance and have several held throughout the year.

Where should we meet the ferry?

  • Our ferry departs from EDIC dock in the Seaport, 11 Terminal St, Boston MA, 02210.
  • Look for the blue awning with the Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound School logo.

How far is the ferry ride?

About 25 minutes, depending on the waves and boat traffic.

Can we bring our kids?

Volunteers may bring their children on “Family Days,” if booked at least 60 days in advance to allow for proper staffing ratios. These days also incur an additional fee. Please contact Jackson Donahue for more information.

Can we change our group size / date after booking?

Group sizes may be upgraded, provided there is space listed on the calendar for that day. For instance, a group of 25 can upgrade to 50 (with another invoice of $1000) if there is not already another group that day. However, as soon as another group books that day, this will no longer be an option.

Groups may not reschedule their day or downgrade their group size after they are invoiced. Invoices are issued upon confirmation of the date with company representative. The only exception is in the event of extreme weather, in which CSIOBS will move the day to a reserved rain date in the same month.

All bookings are non-refundable.

Testimonial from Keishalee Shaw at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts!

“I’ve volunteered through the Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound Corporate Volunteer Program at least seven times. I see volunteering as a way for me to give back to community, and as a way for me to get to know our community. Our company Service Day (on Cathleen Stone Island) has allowed me to meet associates from different parts of my organization that I do not normally work with and connect with them on a different level doing something outside of the traditional 8-hour workday!”

Thank You to Our 2025 Corporate Volunteers!
